The term “doula” is Greek it comes from ancient Greece. It means servant, a woman who serves other women.
What is a doula?
A birth doula is a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother and her partner before, during and after childbirth. Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula's presence at birth:
- tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
- reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug)
- reduces the need for forceps or vacuum extraction
- reduces the requests for pain medication and epidurals
- reduces the incidence of cesarean births
- increases the success of VBAC births
- increases the overall satisfaction of the birthing experience for the couple
Mission Statement
Giving birth to a baby is so much more than a physical journey; it engages the parents-to-be in a transformational experience, a life altering event. I honor the normal life process of birth. I hope to help women have a greater trust in their body’s ability to birth. I believe there are many paths through birth. I respect a women’s deepest intuition about how she needs to bring her baby into the world. I respect the women’s choice to give birth in a setting of her choice. I assist couples in helping them make choices that are best suited to their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. I love being a part of this transformational time in a couple’s life. I support a variety of diverse family backgrounds. I am open-minded about birthing and parenting lifestyle choices. I am honored to be a witness to the miracle of birth.
